Possessive Processing in Bilingual Comprehension

چکیده
Abstract Second language (L2) learners make gender errors with possessive pronouns. In production, these are modulated by the match between possessor and possessee noun. We examined whether this so‐called effect extends to L2 comprehension attempting replicate a recent study on predictions in first (L1) German speakers (Stone, Veríssimo, et al., 2021). By comparing Spanish English of whose languages have different constraints, we were able examine was participants’ L1. A experiment suggested that effects absent setups complex visual displays. second simpler displays successfully elicited effects, but their size comparable speakers, inconsistent crosslinguistic influence. interpret our results as evidence processing difficulties possessives result from memory interference impacts both L1 comprehenders.

Comprehension of Possessive and Container Phrases in Children with Sli
Children with SLI show a variety of language difficulties, but it is generally agreed that their syntax/grammar is more affected than other language components. More specifically, research on their language production shows marked delays in their acquisition of grammatical morphemes, especially those associated with the verbal system, while the nominal system is mostly intact (Rice and Oetting,...
متن کاملSemantic facilitation in bilingual everyday speech comprehension
Previous research suggests that bilinguals presented with low and high predictability sentences benefit from semantics in clear but not in conversational speech [1]. In everyday speech, how ever, many words are not highly predictable. Previous research has shown that native listeners can use also more subtle seman tic contextual information [2]. The present study reports two au ditory lexica...
متن کاملModelling Reading Times in Bilingual Sentence Comprehension
Relatively little is known about the interaction between a bilingual’s two languages beyond the word level. This paper investigates the issue by comparing word reading times (RTs) in both L1 and L2 to quantitative predictions by statistical language models. Recurrent neural networks are trained on either a Dutch corpus, an English corpus, or the two corpora combined (i.e., the bilingual network...
متن کاملComprehension of Code-switching by Bilingual Infants
Bilingual children are regularly exposed to code-switching, a linguistic phenomenon consisting of mixing two languages within the same context (Byers-Heinlein, 2013a). Studies have demonstrated that adults are slower to process code-switched language (Grainger & O’regan, 1992), and preliminary studies testing intra-sentential switches (“Where is the chien?”) found similar results with toddlers ...
متن کاملIntentions In Bilingual Dialogue Processing
The role of intentions in the IT system varies with the role of the dialogue manager. In processing dialogues of Types 4 and 5, the IT is acting as an agent in a private dialogue with one of the users. It must discern the user's plan and (dynamically) construct and execute its own plan for repairing the dialogue error condition in collaboration with the user. The IT system can influence the use...
